Currently the demand for rental housing and rental apartments is high in both Whitby and Ajax.

Currently the demand for rental housing and rental apartments is high in both Whitby and Ajax.

In my conversation with the Program Manager with the 'housing services division' at Durham Region Social Services on March 23rd, 2011 it was indicated that the highest demand is currently for one and  two bedroom apartments, especially for clientelle over the age of 50 years. This age group historically stays longer in these units, compared to those geared towards families.

Page 15. See Zone 3 (Whitby)  Shows vacancy rates in October 2010 of  only 3.1% for 1 bdrms, 0.6% for 2bdrms and 1.2%  for 3 bdrm units.

Page 17. (lower section of page) Shows average rentals of $869 for 1bdrm, $962 for 2 bdrms and $1049 for 3 Bdrms.

Page 18. (lower section of page) Shows the actual number af Rental units compared to actual vacancies (zone 4 is Whitby). Note that in October 2010 there were 839 one bdrm units with only 26 vacancies, there were 1187 two bdrm units with only 7 vacancies and 262 there bdrm units with only 3 vacancies.
